This report analyzes the regulatory misalignment between Tanzania’s Environmental Management Act (EMA) and the Mining Act as they relate to Artisanal and Small‑Scale Gold Mining (ASGM). It highlights how conflicting requirements—particularly between Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Protection Plans (EPPs)—create compliance gaps, weaken environmental governance, and expose communities to significant health and ecological risks. The report concludes with policy recommendations aimed at harmonizing legislation, strengthening institutional coordination, and improving environmental management in the ASGM sector.
This report captures FADev’s impactful participation in the 8th Geita Mining Technology Exhibition, where the organisation championed responsible artisanal and small‑scale gold mining. Instead of showcasing machinery, FADev focused on knowledge-sharing—demonstrating mercury‑free retort technology, distributing simplified policy papers, and engaging miners through peer‑led Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions. With nearly 900 visitors reached, the report highlights how FADev bridged gaps between law, safety, and everyday mining realities, empowering communities with practical, scalable solutions for safer and more sustainable mining practices.
FADev has released a new Implementation Report highlighting how artisanal and small-scale miners in Dodoma, Morogoro, Singida, and Tanga are strengthening value addition, safety, and environmental practices in development minerals. Implemented with UNDP under the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme, the initiative reached over 700 miners and showcases practical, community-led solutions for a more inclusive and sustainable mining sector in Tanzania.
